Eastern Michigan University Faculty Senate to host day-long teach-in, "Know Justice. Know Peace."

Event takes place on Monday, November 14

Ypsilanti - The Eastern Michigan University Faculty Senate invites all members of the EMU community – students, faculty, and staff – to attend “Know Justice, Know Peace,” a day-long teach-in on racism, diversity and inclusion, Monday, November 14 from 8:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. in McKenny Hall. The teach-in will provide a space where the community can come together to consider what we can do to ensure that EMU is a genuinely inclusive and democratic institution in which all individuals and groups are secure, respected, and valued.

The featured keynote speaker of the teach-in will be Victor Lewis, a nationally recognized social justice educator, trainer and activist. Lewis’s talk “The Color of Fear,” will explore the causes and effects of racism, as well as strategies for overcoming racism and achieving social justice. In addition to the keynote address, the teach-in will feature smaller, break-out sessions on a wide range of topics, including the causes of wealth disparity in the U.S., the dimensions of white supremacy, disability rights, the immigrant experience, structural violence and peace building, the Civil Rights movement, and Black Lives Matter.  Two documentary films – 13th and White Like Me: Race, Racism, and White Privilege in America will be shown from 3:30-4:45.

The teach-in is free and open to the entire campus community. Participants can come for all or part of the day, and need only to register on the day of the event in the McKenney Ballroom mezzanine. Breakfast and lunch will be provided at no charge to the first 250 participants who register. Learning beyond the classroom credit will be provided for students. In addition, student participants will receive a university excused absence if they miss one or more classes while attending the teach-in. Instructors may also choose to move their classes to the teach-in.
