YPSILANTI – A group of human resources students from Eastern Michigan University recently took first place in a statewide HR games competition.

The students competed at this past fall’s Michigan Council of the Society for Human Resource Management Conference, held in Traverse City.

The event is a three-day conference with professional HR attendees from around the state, and offers educational forums aimed at providing information to help HR representatives flourish in their career fields. Students network with future HR leaders, hear from speakers and engage with state professionals.

Included in the conference is the HR Games, a friendly competition allows students to test their comprehension skills in a Jeopardy-style game format. Teams participate in multiple rounds and the team with the most points wins.

Eastern’s student team included Banpreet Kaur, president of the EMU student chapter of the Society of Human Resource Management, Brian Eggenberger, vice president of social media for the group; and Hailey LaMay, vice president of communications.

"I had a great time at HR Games,” Eggenberger said. “It was an awesome opportunity to network with HR professionals and meet fellow students. I learned so much about the field and met some very helpful resources as I start my career."

Fraya Wagner-Marsh, a professor of management, serves as faculty advisor to the student group.

“HR Games is a fun way for students to increase their knowledge about the profession and have a chance to work with other EMU HR students as well as network with professionals across the state,” she said.

The EMU SHRM chapter was chartered in 1995 and currently has more than 60 student members. Faculty co-advisors include Dr. Wagner-Marsh, Dr. Anushri Rawat, and Dr. Lax Manroop.
