YPSILANTI – Eastern Michigan University plans to continue to support its ongoing investment in the residential experience while limiting cost increases to students by increasing housing rates by an average of 2.94 percent in the coming academic year.

The increase is $180 per year, or $22.50 a month for all University housing with the exception of the Village complex, which will not increase.

The increases range from 0 percent to 3.96 percent, depending on location. The Residence Halls percentage increase of 2 percent is the lowest increase since the University did not raise room and board rates during the ”0-0-0” campaign in 2010-11

The percent increase in apartments rates ranges from 2.61 percent to 4.1 percent, depending on location. The increases will help address a portion of the deferred maintenance associated with these buildings.      

Meal plan rates will increase 2.95 percent. This increase corresponds to the expected inflation rate for food services, and allows for the maintenance of high quality food offerings within Eastern Michigan’s dining facilities.

Students and staff have continued to benefit from the University’s partnership with its dining services partner, Compass Group North America – Chartwells Higher Education (Chartwells), a collaboration that has resulted in expansion and improvement of EMU’s facilities and its campus dining experience.

Student surveys have shown that more students are eating in the Student Center than before the dining partnership and that there is greater usage of the Commons residence hall dining area as well.

The EMU Board of Regents approved the increases at its regular meeting Friday, Dec. 13.
