YPSILANTI — Eastern Michigan University has earned a spot in the top 15 of MilitaryTimes.com’s 2021 Best for Vets: Colleges list, ranking 13th out of more than 360 US colleges. EMU moved up more than 20 spots from its No. 35 ranking in the 2020 list.

The announcement by MilitaryTimes.com follows the ranking earlier this year by Military Friendly Schools in which Eastern Michigan was ranked number two in the United States and number one in Michigan.

“Eastern Michigan University andthe Lt. Col. Charles S. Kettles Military and Veteran Services Resource Center take so much pride in helping military and veteran students—and their families—achieve their educational goals in a caring, friendly environment,” said Lt. Col. Michael C. Wise, EMU’s Military and Veteran Services assistant director. “We’re incredibly proud of our resource center and all of the support we’re able to offer our military and veteran students across campus.”

EMU established its military and veteran support center in 2014 and later named it in honor of the late U.S. Army Lt. Colonel Charles S. Kettles, a Medal of Honor recipient, Eastern Michigan University alum, and Ypsilanti resident.

In 2015, the center expanded its services for veterans after Eastern was awarded the TRIO-Veteran Student Support Services grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The University also holds a 69-year commitment to its Army ROTC program.

EMU veterans services also include space to study and/or socialize, counseling on VA/DoD benefits and financial aid, processing of VA/DoD benefits and financial aid, personal financial support and/or advice, academic help (such as tutoring), academic advising, mentorship programs, assistance with class registration, career advising, social events for vets and military families, military-related service projects, additional help for physically disabled vets, mental health counseling, and more.

“These rankings reflect the hard work that our team and the University puts in every day to ensure seamless and supportive experiences for our students,” said Lt. Col. Wise.
