YPSILANTI –  Eastern Michigan University plans to continue to support the ongoing investment in its campus residential experience while limiting cost increases to students by increasing housing rates in campus residence halls and apartments by an average of 3% in the 2022-23 academic year, lower than the cost of inflation. The increase averages $180 per year, or $22.50 per month.

The University will continue its reduced costs for single rooms at an annual cost of $1,600 over the cost of a double room in 2022-23. That is an increase from the $1,000 price differential last year, but remains below the $2,500 single room surcharge that was in place in 2020-21. The reduced differential for single rooms is an initiative the University launched to encourage more single room housing as part of its #EMUSafe response to COVID-19.

Meal plan rates in the 2022-23 academic year will increase 4.78%, less than the increase in inflation. The most recent Consumer Price Index shows costs in the “food away from home” category increased nationally by 6.4% over the past 12 months. The increase allows for the maintenance of high-quality food offerings in Eastern Michigan’s dining facilities.

Students and staff have continued to benefit from the University’s partnership with its dining services partner, Compass Group North America – Chartwells Higher Education, a collaboration that has resulted in expansion and improvement of EMU’s facilities and its campus dining experience.

“We work very hard to minimize the impact of higher housing and food costs,” said University Chief Financial Officer Michael Valdes. “These increases, which are less than the cost of inflation, reflect our efforts to keep costs as affordable as possible for our students.”

The EMU Board of Regents approved the increases at its regular meeting Thursday, Feb. 17. Complete details can be found on the Board recommendation.

Welcome Home 2025

In December 2021, the University announced “Welcome Home 2025,” a $200 million partnership to transform campus housing. The plan includes construction of new housing facilities and renovations to existing housing. Among the signature elements of “Welcome Home 2025” is the construction of a new, approximately 400-bed apartment-style residence hall next to the Student Center that will overlook the pond on the north side of campus.

The $200 million-plus investment will be financed through a partnership with Gilbane Development Company. EMU students are integrally involved in the planning and design of new and renovated housing. Under the plan, EMU will continue to manage all aspects of the residence life experience, including: hiring, training, and supervising resident advisors; assigning rooms to student residents; collecting student payments; and managing student housing contracts.
