YPSILANTI – Eastern Michigan University’s College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) will host more than 150 students and faculty from nine different CHHS programs at the Excellence in IPE event – EMU’s most extensive interprofessional education gathering. The event is slated for 3-5 p.m. on Friday, November 11.

The EMU Excellence in IPE event aims to expose participants to interprofessional education while examining an actual case study where interprofessional practice and collaboration between professionals from various healthcare areas come together. Students are not expected to be experts but actively participate in the activity with students from other disciplines.

“The College of Health and Human Services has adopted and embraced a culture of promoting Interprofessional Education within and among our programs,” said Kathy Seurynck, co-director of nursing and IPE Simulation. “It provides our students the opportunity to learn from, with, and about each other, so they’re better prepared to be productive members of a healthcare team.”

Students will collaborate with other disciplines to discuss a real-life case study.  Participants will explore a patient who experienced trauma to both legs in the early stages of life while examining the interprofessional care he received in the past. The experience will involve communicating, planning, and using teamwork skills in small groups and ultimately discussing it with actual providers and patients.

In addition to strengthening collaboration across multidisciplinary teams, students can expect to enhance their resume and interview skills, collaborate with individuals in multiple disciplines, and participate in EMU’s largest virtual simulation experience.

The event is part of EMU’s Interprofessional Education initiative, a collaborative approach to developing healthcare students as future interprofessional team members. IPE fosters an educational culture that provides pre-professional learning opportunities that integrate disciplines and teach the teamwork approach to patient/client care.
