YPSILANTI — The Eastern Michigan University Department of Public Safety will enforce expanded security initiatives for the University’s two commencement ceremonies on Sunday, April 30. A total of 1,895 graduates are eligible to participate in the ceremonies at Eastern’s George Gervin GameAbove Center.

The first ceremony takes place at 9:30 a.m., featuring graduates from the colleges of Arts and Sciences and Education, as well as Individualized Studies. The second ceremony takes place at 1:30 p.m., featuring graduates from the colleges of Business, Engineering and Technology, and Health and Human Services.

“The enhanced security measures are designed to increase a sense of safety while attending large scale events on the campus of EMU,” said Matthew Lige, executive director of public safety and chief of police. “These measures are being employed out of an abundance of caution given tragic events that have occurred across our nation.

“There will be signage prior to entering the George Gervin GameAbove Center reminding students, staff and guests of items that are prohibited and those that are allowed. Security staff and law enforcement professionals will be available to answer any questions prior to entering the facility. Please allow yourself a few extra minutes before the start of your scheduled ceremony to participate in this screening process.”

The security measures include:

All individuals will be subject to a metal detector screening upon entry into the Center.

The following items are prohibited:

  • Weapons including handguns, tasers and chemical sprays
  • Fireworks
  • Knives, box cutters and scissors
  • Laser pointers
  • Book bags, purses, briefcases, backpacks, paper bags, luggage, duffle bags, wrapped gifts or gift bags

The following items may be allowed after inspection:

  • Diaper bags
  • Medically necessary items
  • Child carriers
  • Small clutch purses 4.5" x 6.5"
  • Camera bags
  • Clear bags

All guests should be prepared to place their wallets, cell phone, and keys into a bin during the screening process.

Lige added that the same security protocols will be in place this summer for the many high school graduation ceremonies that are held at the George Gervin GameAbove Center.
