YPSILANTI — Eastern Michigan University is proud to announce Trevor Peterson Jr., a resident of Canton, Michigan, has been named a Presidential Scholar for 2024. Peterson is one of only 21 dynamic students selected for this prestigious honor, awarded to top-performing first-year students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership, and a strong commitment to their communities.

The EMU Presidential Scholarship is the most prestigious award, valued at up to $100K. The scholarship covers full tuition, fees, and four-year room and board. Presidential Scholars are active and engaged members of The Honors College at EMU, complementing their academic college experience with further opportunities for critical thinking, community engagement, and leadership.

"This scholarship has allowed me to receive the education I've always wanted and helps me achieve the career I've dreamed of," said Peterson. "I plan to put my all into my studies as a sign of respect towards Eastern because of this opportunity."

Peterson graduated from the Early College Alliance at EMU and is working towards a degree in Computer and Electrical Engineering becoming a computer engineer. In high school, Peterson was a part of the football team, tutored others in math, and was involved in the Black Student Union. He helped to raise fundraising for his school's golf team and marching band and he worked at Panera’s. Additionally, he volunteered for Zaxs Auto Wash. Peterson is excited to meet more people interested in the field he is pursuing and is hoping to get a study abroad experience at EMU.

Throughout high school, Peterson participated in community outreach programs through his church. "Volunteering in my church's community allowed me to help people who lived unfortunate lives,” said Peterson. "We would go to people's houses and help them move, give them rides, help with chores, and take them on grocery store trips."

Currently, Peterson serves as a member of EMU’s National Society of Black Engineers club along with the Eagle’s Filmmakers Association.

"We are excited to have such an impressive group of scholars join us at EMU and the Honors College this fall,” said Ann Eisenberg, dean of the Honors College. “They come from different backgrounds, cultures, and countries, but they all share a passion for learning, service, and leadership, and they have all pledged to give back to EMU through their work in the classroom, student organizations, and campus offices.”

The EMU Presidential Scholarship is aligned with the University's commitment to promoting student success and engagement so students can achieve their academic goals while positively impacting the world.

Qualified students can apply for the Presidential Scholarship during their senior year of high school. For more information about the Presidential Scholarship, visit the webpage
