YPSILANTI — Eastern Michigan University’s Institute for STEM Education, Outreach, and Workforce Development has been awarded a $10K Community Impact Grant from General Motors Romulus. This grant aims to encourage students to pursue careers in skilled trades.

The grant is part of General Motors Romulus’s larger efforts to support Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics education and road safety in local communities. This year, General Motors Romulus has awarded $40,000 in grants to four local nonprofits.

“There continues to be growth in the skilled trades occupation, but there is a critical shortage of talent due to high school students having limited exposure to this career path,” said Sibrina Collins, director of the EMU Institute for STEM Education, Outreach, and Workforce Development in the College of Education.

“The generous funding from General Motors provides us with more resources to engage students in additional school districts including Plymouth-Canton Community Schools and Romulus Community Schools."

Since 2019, General Motors has donated more than $163,000 to nonprofits in the Romulus area. The Community Impact Grant through General Motors, now in its 14th year, has given over $3 million to more than 140 nonprofits nationwide.
