YPSILANTI — The Department of Africology and African American Studies at Eastern Michigan University presents “The Future of Black Politics in America,” an in-person panel discussion in honor of Black History Month. The event will occur on Monday, Feb. 3, 2025, from 12 to 2 p.m. in Room 310A of the Student Center on EMU’s campus. The event is free and open to the public, and light refreshments will be available.

“This event provides an opportunity for the EMU community to engage with a panel of thought leaders who are contributing to the conversation about Black political influence and the fight for social justice,” said Victor Okafor, chair of the Department of Africology and African American Studies. “We hope attendees leave with a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities ahead in the pursuit of equity and representation.”

The panel will feature prominent leaders and scholars, including:

  • Mark Fancher, Esq., civil rights attorney and advocate
  • Eric Brown, public affairs commentator
  • Charles Simmons, professor of Africology and African American Studies
  • Robyn McCoy, Esq., attorney and social justice advocate

The panelists will explore key issues surrounding Black politics in America, including voter suppression, systemic inequities, representation, and pathways toward a more equitable future. The event will also examine the historical legacy of Black political participation, from the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to ongoing challenges such as gerrymandering, voter ID laws, and disenfranchisement.

Attendees are encouraged to participate in a Q&A session following the discussion.

The event is eligible for student credit. For more information, visit the website.
