YPSILANTI — Eastern Michigan University is bringing together various departments to celebrate Black history with Soul Food and Spoken Word Night—an evening dedicated to the rich cultural traditions of soul food, storytelling, and spoken word. Happening on Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. in the McKenny Hall Ballroom, the event highlights the historical significance and lasting impact of these traditions within the Black community.
Attendees will have the opportunity to experience authentic cuisine, engage in meaningful discussions, and deepen their understanding of Black history. The event will feature a selection of food catered by Mo P's Chicken & Fish. Here, students will have the chance to listen to student performances and connect with others.
“More than just an event, Soul Food & Spoken Word Night provides a space for students to come together, share their voices, and experience the power of storytelling in a welcoming and inclusive environment,” said Aliyah Alghazali, student success and engagement coordinator at EMU’s Honors College. “This kind of event honors the diversity of our student body, fosters meaningful dialogue, and highlights the transformative power of shared experiences.”
Hosted by the Center of Race and Ethnicity, The Honors College, EMU’s Forensics team, and the Black Honors Student Organization, the event will feature five different performances ranging from themes of love, communication, and metaphorical pieces. Students interested in performing have the opportunity to volunteer through this link. Additionally, a handout involving the history of soul food and spoken words will be provided to attendees.
Students planning to attend Soul Food and Spoken Word Night are encouraged to attend and receive LBC credit.
