YPSILANTI — Eastern Michigan University recently recognized Kroger Co. at an EMU basketball game for its $10,000 contribution to Swoop’s Food Pantry through its Zero Hunger | Zero Waste Foundation, supporting efforts to combat food insecurity among EMU students. Since the pantry’s inception, Kroger has donated over $90,000 to the pantry through various grants.
Understanding the importance of food security and its impact on overall health and well-being, graduate assistant Colton Ray is a testament to the pantry's impact on many EMU students. "I started shopping at Swoop’s Pantry in the fall of 2020,” said Ray. “It was my first year living independently, and in 2021, I was fortunate to become a work-study employee at the pantry, which ultimately inspired me to change my major to social work."
The critical demand among EMU students continues to surge with over 1,300 intake forms this year alone and an average of 90 daily student visits to Swoop's Pantry. The partnership with Kroger has responded to the increasing need for stability. With a mission to meet the growing need for food assistance, Swoop's Food Pantry has become a trusted resource for many within the campus community. By offering nutritious food at no cost, the pantry ensures that no student goes hungry.
“The pantry's purpose is to alleviate hunger, promote health and well-being, and create a sense of stability within the local community,” said Christa Reid, executive director of development for College of Health and Human Services and College of Education. “The pantry does much more than provide food and personal care items. We strive to offer hope, dignity and support during challenging times. We thank Kroger for their steadfast commitment through their Zero Hunger | Zero Waste social and environmental impact plan. Because of you, we can help students realize their dreams and achieve their goals.”
"Working at Swoop’s, applying for scholarships, and having access to groceries through the pantry alleviated many stressors,” said Ray. “It allowed me to graduate with academic honors and lessen my student loan debt burden. It’s been wonderful to see the pantry grow over the years, thanks to consistent and compassionate donor support."
The Zero Hunger | Zero Waste Foundation was introduced in 2017 and stemmed from Kroger’s commitment as America’s grocer to end hunger in its communities and eliminate waste across the company by 2025. To learn more, visit Kroger’s Zero Hunger | Zero Waste social impact plan.
