YPSILANTI— The Department of History & Philosophy will celebrate the grand opening of the Upshur Institute for Civic Education (UICE) on Thursday, Sept. 21, with special guest Jocelyn Benson, Michigan's Secretary of State. Benson will give a keynote address on the importance of civic education and Constitution Day.  The event starts at 4 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom and is free and open to the public. It is LBC approved and students are encouraged to attend.

The event coincides with Michigan's Constitution Week.

The purpose of the UICE is to promote innovative methods of teaching and learning in history, social studies, and civic education; to investigate and test new approaches to history and social studies teacher preparation courses at EMU; and to help foster a new generation of informed and engaged citizens and innovative educators at the high school and college levels for the benefit of students in Michigan and beyond.

The Institute is led by Director Brigid Beaubien, professor of Teacher Education, and is a result of a major gift received last year from History professor Emerita Jiu-Hwa Upshur.
