YPSILANTI – Eastern Michigan University’s Department of Public Safety encourages the community to join them for a fun-filled event with free giveaways, bike riding, and much more. The Bike Rodeo is back for its sixth year and will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, August 5, at the George Gervin GameAbove Center, 799 N. Hewitt Rd. in Ypsilanti.

The Bike rodeo started six years ago to bring awareness and educate the local community about the importance of bike safety. Since its inception, local families are able to learn about bike safety through engaging and interactive activities on Eastern’s campus.

“From the first ever Eastern Michigan University Bike Rodeo, six years ago, the EMU police and our partners have recognized the importance of using our bicycle team to ride side by side with our community,” said Sergeant Joseph Torres from EMU’s Department of Public Safety.

The Bike Rodeo will include free bicycle tune-ups, helmet and fitting, bike safety checks, and giveaways this year. EMU’s Department of Public Safety is also donating 60 bicycle locks to any participant who wants one. Refreshments and food will also be on-hand for attendees.

The event has a variety of partners and supporters including C.S Mott Children’s Hospital Pediatric Trauma Program and Safe Kids Huron Valley.

“My vision for this event has always been to make it an EMU event facilitated by the EMU Police,” said Sergeant Torres. “I want people to understand what a great community we have and support how much EMU has to offer the cycling community of Washtenaw County and the surrounding area.”
