YPSILANTI – Several trumpet students from Eastern Michigan University's School of Music & Dance have earned spots to display their talent in this year's National Trumpet Competition. The students will travel to Texas A&M University-Kingsville on March 8-11, 2024, to compete against their peers at the national level.

Eric Pereira, Adriano Estraiotto, Emily Smith, Nathan Bohr, and Carter Coyne are among the few chosen to advance to the competition's live rounds, showcasing their musical abilities. Pereira and Estraiotto will also compete in the Graduate Solo Division. Participants include graduate and undergraduate students majoring in Music Education or Music Performance at EMU.

"We are incredibly proud of our students for participating in the National Trumpet Competition," said  Anderson Romero, assistant professor of music in the School of Music & Dance. "This achievement reflects their talent and hard work and the outstanding instruction they receive from our faculty. During the competition, they can show their progress and the results of their hard work."

The National Trumpet Competition, founded in 1992 by Dennis Edelbrock, provides an educational platform for young trumpet players across the U.S. through annual competitions, masterclasses, exhibitions, and educational experiences. The competition fosters a supportive environment for over 3,000 students from across the globe to showcase their talents and learn from renowned trumpet artists and faculty.

"I'm an international student at EMU and since I began my musical journey with the trumpet, I've always dreamed of experiencing the competition firsthand,” said Pereira. “I know this event can have a profound impact on my life as a performance student, not only because of the competition itself but also due to the workshops with renowned trumpet players from both the U.S. and around the world.”

The School of Music & Dance at Eastern Michigan University offers a comprehensive trumpet program, taught by renowned faculty. It provides students with opportunities to excel in solo and ensemble performance.

"This is such a great achievement for our students, and we are excited to see them represent Eastern Michigan University on the national stage,” said Christopher Barrick, director and professor of music in the School of Music & Dance.
