Dr. David C. Winters is Department Head and Professor in the Department of Special Education & Communication Sciences and Disorders at Eastern Michigan University. He earned his Ph.D. in Communication Sciences and Disorders - Learning Disabilities from Northwestern University in 2001. He has been a university professor, classroom teacher, tutor, diagnostician, administrator and tutor/teacher trainer for more than 35 years. His primary focus has been on persons with dyslexia and other reading learning disabilities, with an emphasis on helping them become literate through structured literacy.
Most recently, he has focused on instructional and assistive technology and is the author of the periodic “Dr. Dave’s AT Lab” column in The Examiner, the online newsletter of the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) (www.eida.org). Previously, he directed the clinical program for the Children’s Dyslexia Centers, where he helped develop its structured literacy curriculum and tutor training at centers in 15 states. Dr. Winters holds Dyslexia Specialist certification from the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) and is a Fellow in the Orton-Gillingham Academy of Practitioners and Educators (AOGPE). In addition, he has been president or vice-president of the Illinois, Upper Midwest, and Michigan Branches of the IDA.
