Eastern Michigan University’s chemistry program to Host American Chemical Society’s VOYAGE TO MARS event Oct. 23

YPSILANTI — As part of National Chemistry Week celebrations, the Chemistry Department will host the American Chemical Society’s VOYAGE TO MARS: RED PLANET CHEMISTRY event, which theorizes the chemistry of Mars. This is the second American Chemical Society Program in a Box event that has been proctored at Eastern, following last spring’s popular Opioids event.

This event is LBC3 approved and takes place on Tuesday, October 23, starting at 6:45 p.m. in the Halle Auditorium G03. Refreshments will be served.

The webinar will include a panel of research scientists, Hubble fellows and professors who will address the following topics:

  • How the Curiosity Rover has revealed the geologic history of Mars, and how this knowledge can help inform us about the environments that existed on the surface of Earth and Mars during the time when life evolved.
  • The unique challenges of long term space travel and a profile of the current work to ensure that humans can survive the voyage.
  • What is the current state of recycle waste research that will be able to sustain valuable material using biopharmaceutical production.

We welcome everyone from on and off campus to the event,” said Sai Priya Marrapu, a graduate assistant for the Creative Scientific Inquiry Experience (CSIE) program at EMU, which is helping to host the program “The event addresses the general things about the Earth and Mars, so the audience could be of any major — not just chemistry or other science majors. The audience can learn the geological history of Mars, about challenges of long-term space travel, and the current state of recycling waste.”
