Eastern Michigan University College of Business named among nation’s best for 18th consecutive year by The Princeton Review

YPSILANTI – Eastern Michigan University's College of Business has been named one of the nation’s best graduate business schools for the 18th consecutive year by The Princeton Review.

Eastern was one of 241 business schools nationwide named to the “Best Business Schools” list. The list, which identifies universities with the best on-campus MBA, is based on a combination of institutional and student survey data, including career outcomes, admissions selectivity, and academic rigor, among others.

The EMU College of Business has more than 2,400 students pursuing one of 14 majors or an MBA, masters of information systems, masters of integrated marketing communications, masters of human resources and organizational development, masters of accounting, masters of taxation, or a graduate certificate.

Student surveys play a role in rankings

The Princeton Review bases its rankings of business schools on school-reported data along with feedback from students and administrators. The survey asked students about Eastern’s academics, student body, campus life, and themselves and their career plans.

Comments from students, as posted on The Princeton Review site, include:

  • With its convenient location, “experienced professors,” and “low tuition,” the MBA program at Eastern Michigan University’s College of Business offers a great return on investment. “Designed for working professionals,” EMU’s courses are offered in the evenings, on the weekends, via the internet, and through hybrid online/classroom delivery. The format is totally flexible, and students can take as little as one class per semester and up to a full course load. While balancing a career and an education can be tricky business, students say EMU “provides great support for students and overall great atmosphere of learning.”

  • At EMU, “most of the professors are amazing,” with close to 100% of the school’s faculty holding the highest degree available in their field. Graduate class sizes average fewer than 20, which allows students to “work directly with professors who provide PhD-level class time, rather than having to work through a teaching assistant.” The result is a dynamic classroom environment in which discussion is encouraged and “professors challenge you to develop your own opinions regarding global business and economies.” In addition to the professors, there are “lots of diverse work experience among the students,” adding even more depth to the academic environment. Real-world applications are stressed in the classroom.

  • Catering to its diverse student body, EMU offers specializations in a variety of business fields, including business analytics, e-business, entrepreneurship, internal auditing, international business, management, and nonprofit management, as well as the opportunity to pursue a general MBA with no particular specialization (in that case, students can take a range of elective coursework to meet the units required for graduation).

  • Students say it’s “great to interact with other professionals” at the College of Business, describing their classmates as “career-oriented” and ambitious, yet “easy to get along with.” For students on the main campus who’d like to branch out socially, there are “a number of clubs available for those who have time,” including an MBA Association.

  • Located in the suburban community of Ypsilanti, the EMU campus is “very convenient” to both Ann Arbor and Detroit, and these two cities provide endless cultural, entertainment, food, and nightlife options. Drawing from the greater metropolitan area, EMU’s College of Business is incredibly “multicultural,” with students from a range of backgrounds and levels of experience.
