Faculty and Staff at Eastern Michigan University are constantly exploring new ways to engage students and foster a deeper understanding of real-world issues. One such approach gaining traction on campus is the YPAR Certificate Program, offered in partnership with EMU Professional Programs and Training and Discover Without Barriers Consulting.
YPAR is a collaborative methodology that centers on youth voice. It engages students to identify community challenges, conduct research, and develop solutions. This approach moves beyond traditional classroom instruction, fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and civic engagement.
Students who have participated in the YPAR program have reported positive outcomes including increases in student engagement and a deeper understanding of community needs after implementing a YPAR project. Students, engage in the research process, conduct interviews, analyze data, and present their findings to appropriate audiences to influence policy changes.
The impact of YPAR extends beyond individual classrooms. By equipping students and educators with the tools and knowledge to implement YPAR projects, YPAR assists in facilitating a culture of student-centered learning and community engagement.
Looking Ahead:
The YPAR Certificate Program offers a valuable opportunity for EMU community to enhance their teaching practices and engage their students more deeply. By embracing YPAR, the university can continue cultivating a vibrant learning environment where students are not just recipients of knowledge, but active participants in shaping their communities.
