Eastern Michigan University annually commemorates 9/11 with a Ceremony of Remembrance at its 9/11 Memorial, located at PeasePark on the University's campus. The event will begin at 8:30 a.m., Tuesday, September 11.
Eastern's memorial features a steel beam from the 74th floor of the South Tower of the World Trade Center, four floors below where the second plane struck. The event is attended by first responders, students, faculty, staff and people from the nearby community. The solemn, 30-minute memorial ceremony features a singing of the National Anthem, taps, chimes, Eastern's ROTC Honor Guard, and a moment of silence precisely at 8:46 a.m.. consistent with the time of the start of the attack. The event concludes with attendees placing carnations on the memorial.
