Eastern Michigan University student to host “Inclusion Day” to spotlight Paralympic sports and importance of adaptive sports on April 1

Who: Eastern Michigan University students led by senior Luke Swanson

What: "Inclusion Day" – An interactive event promoting Paralympic sports and inclusion

When: Tuesday, April 1,  5 - 7 p.m.

Where: REC/IM, 500 East Circle Dr. in Ypsilanti

Background: To help expose students to Paralympic sports, Eastern Michigan University senior Luke Swanson is set to host “Inclusion Day” from 5 to 7 p.m. at the REC/IM, 500 East Circle Dr. in Ypsilanti. About 20 students are planning to participate in a variety of adaptive sports, including:

  • Sitting Volleyball: A variation of traditional volleyball that eliminates the need to stand, allowing for a fast-paced and engaging game.

  • Wheelchair Basketball: A competitive sport that modifies standard basketball rules to accommodate seated players.

  • Goalball: An accessible sport that has no counterpart. Participants wear masks and are tasked with getting a ball with a bell inside into another player’s net, making players rely on sound instead of sight.

“It’s important to have sports events that unite individuals with and without disabilities,” said Swanson. “I hope people develop an interest in Paralympic sports and understand their importance.”
