Eastern Michigan University’s National Student Speech and Hearing Association honored as Silver Chapter for leadership and advocacy

YPSILANTI—The National Student Speech and Hearing Association Executive Council has awarded Eastern Michigan University’s student-run chapter Silver Chapter honors for its efforts in raising the standard for advocacy, leadership, and education for future EMU Speech-Language and Pathology students.

“This honor is truly special in that it is the first time our chapter has received national recognition through the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association,” said chapter president Casie Shannon. “I am very grateful that our hard work has been acknowledged with this prestigious award, as it reinforces our efforts.”

The National Student Speech-Language and Hearing Association (NSSLHA) is a pre-professional membership association for students interested in the study of communication sciences and disorders. The EMU chapter is a student organized and student run organization, advised by professors Lidia Lee and Audrey Bernard.

To receive Silver Honors, students in the chapter engaged in proactive fundraising, community involvement and outreach and advocacy for their field.

Last year’s events included bringing guest speakers to campus as well as Research Day, where undergraduate students received an in-depth tutorial to familiarize themselves with graduate-level research. The chapter’s fundraising efforts also sponsored eight students to attend the annual Michigan Speech-Language Hearing Association Conference.

The student chapter and the Department of Special Education at Eastern will host an upcoming public film screening of WHEN I STUTTER on June 30 at the Michigan Theater. Directed by John Gomez, the documentary highlights the experiences of 19 people who stutter and how stuttering has impacted their lives.

Each screening will be hosted by Shannon, the student chapter president, and followed with a Q&A session featuring Gomez and Scott Palasik, one of the participants in the film. To purchase tickets or to learn more about the film screenings and Q&A Sessions, please visit the Michigan Theater’s box office or online ticketing site.
