YPSILANTI —Lauren Mara D. Colina, of St. Clair Shores, Mich., is one of 21 students to receive the Presidential Scholarship at Eastern Michigan University for the 2020-2021 academic year.

The Presidential Scholarship is a four-year award that pays for 30 credit hours per year of in-state tuition, housing, a food allowance and mandatory fees.

During her time at EMU, Lauren plans to pursue a major in international business entrepreneurship.

In high school, Lauren was involved in the Student Council, the National Art Honor Society, the Science National Honor Society, powder puff football, the Drama Club, yearbook, Quiz Bowl, and link crew, and she helped support and organize numerous minor school organizations, including leading an Anime club, co-founding a Filipino-American Cultural group, etc.

She also led her classmates with pride and passionately worked to raise community spirit as the school mascot. Lauren plans to graduate with honors in four years and gain experience in the business world, working for one or more companies. She hopes to learn and discover more ethical, inclusive, and environment-friendly ways of running a business before she starts her own company and takes over her family homecare business

Presidential Scholars are selected during Eastern Michigan University’s Presidential Scholarship Competition, held in December during a student’s senior year of high school. Awards are highly competitive and based on many factors, including an essay and multiple rounds of interviews. To qualify for the competition, high school seniors must have at least a 3.5 GPA and a minimum of a 25 ACT or 1130 SAT.
