YPSILANTI —  From March 10 to March 14, thousands will come together to observe Civic Learning Week, a time dedicated to highlighting the importance of civic education. In celebration, Eastern Michigan University’s Upshur Institute for Civic Education (UICE) will raise awareness on the power of educating students on democracy and their rights. The institute uplifts future history educators, encouraging students to approach history in an innovative and community-based way.

“The teaching of civics should be celebrated as a patriotic endeavor,” said Brigid Beaubien, director of the UICE. “Civic learning empowers young people to own the past, take the helm, and chart a course toward the future with the necessary tools to engage as members of our self-governing society.”

Civic education aims to motivate students to understand how the government operates nationally and locally. It promotes place-based learning, where students actively engage in their communities through service or local government involvement. The UICE also emphasizes professional development, helping students become responsible, engaged citizens after graduation.

To spotlight place-based learning styles, the UICE will host a luncheon on March 11 from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Halle Library on 955 W Circle Drive in hopes of empowering educators to incorporate civic learning into their classrooms.

Beaubien hopes all students and educators will take time to reflect on civic engagement. “Celebrating Civic Learning Week is the perfect opportunity to work towards a stronger community at home that uplifts everyone.”
