Eastern Michigan University event on March 4 to offer adaptive swimming, scuba diving, and snorkeling lesson to individuals with physical challenges

YPSILANTI – Eastern Michigan University’s Master of Science in Orthotics and Prosthetics program will host its annual “First Swim, First Snorkel and First Dive” event on March 4 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Jones Pool at the Rec IM.

The event provides introductory level adapted recreation opportunities for amputees, people in wheelchairs, individuals with cerebral palsy, and survivors of strokes or other physical challenges.

Eastern's Master of Science in Orthotics and Prosthetics program trains students to help individuals with physical disabilities.

“Part of training our students to enter this healthcare profession is teaching them that being a professional involves care of the whole person, not simply delivering a device,” said Wendy Beattie, the Clinical and Program Director of the Orthotic and Prosthetic Master’s program. “This clinic provides students the opportunity to help patients learn or relearn skills for improving the quality of their lives."

Certified adaptive swimming, scuba diving and snorkeling instructors from across the U.S. teach the clinics and help participants face challenges in a safe, nurturing environment.

The event is coordinated by Eastern Michigan University Orthotics and Prosthetics students and is sponsored by the University of Michigan Orthotics and Prosthetics Center, Capital City Scuba, Anew Life Prosthetics and Orthotics, and Ropp Orthopedic Clinic.

There is no cost to participate but registration by Friday, March 2 is necessary. Please contact Robin Burton for required scuba preregistration medical screening at robin@opafonline.org or 980-819-9404. All other registration should be completed here.
