You're invited to cover EMU MLK Celebration events for Friday, Jan. 12

Eastern Michigan University's 32nd annual MLK celebration continues Friday, Jan. 12 with the MLK Day of Service and a special performance by The Poetry Society.
The MLK Day of Service will take place in the EMU Honors College Auditorium (511 W Forest Ave, Ypsilanti), from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. The VISION Volunteer Center will be hosting a morning of volunteering for EMU students, faculty and staff. All that’s needed is that you sign up and show-up the day of, ready to make a difference.
Later in the day comes The Color of Drums Poetry Celebration, to be held in Pease Auditorium. Doors Open at 6:30 p.m. and the show, which is free and open to the public, begins at 7 p.m. The Color of Drums is an annual show hosted by The Poetry Society, where acting and poetry collide on stage. The show entails multiple skits performed by the organization as it relates to common topics throughout today's society revolving around the MLK Celebration theme.
Eastern's MLK celebration, one of the largest in Michigan, also includes theatrical performances, a community conversation, academic program sessions, the annual keynote address, and more. This year's keynote speaker is Joy-Ann Reid, a political analyst for MSNBC and host of “AM Joy,” who will speak in the Student Center Auditorium at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, January 15.
