Eastern Michigan University appoints Lauren London as general counsel, Leigh Greden as president’s chief of staff

YPSILANTI –  Eastern Michigan University has announced two additions to its executive team with the promotion of two administrators who have served the University in key positions over the last several years.

Lauren London, who has served as EMU’s associate general counsel for more than four years, has been appointed general counsel at the University. Leigh Greden, who has worked at Eastern since 2015 as a consultant and assistant to the president of the University and earlier served as EMU’s chief of governmental and community relations, has been appointed as chief of staff to the president.

Lauren London

London replaces Gloria Hage, who left EMU to take a position with the University of Michigan. London will serve as the University’s primary legal counsel and advisor. Greden will continue to work closely with faculty, students, alumni, staff and the greater community while advising the president and helping accomplish a variety of University initiatives.

London and Greden were appointed after national searches for each position.

London, who has practiced law in Michigan for more than 16 years, started at Eastern in November of 2013. Before her promotion to the general counsel position, she served as EMU's sole associate general counsel for more than four years, handling a wide range of legal issues on behalf of the University.

Prior to that, she was assistant general counsel for Robert Bosch LLC in Farmington Hills, focusing on commercial law, contract negotiation, product liability, antitrust and civil litigation.  Before Bosch, London spent several years as a litigator and appellate specialist with the Dykema Gossett law firm.

She graduated from Brown University in 1998 with an Sc.B., with honors in Psychology. She earned her law degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2002, and later completed a judicial clerkship with the Honorable Raymond M. Kethledge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.

In her free time, London serves as executive director of The Penny Seats Theatre Company, an Ann Arbor-based theater troupe.  She lives in Ann Arbor with her husband and two children. London’s salary will be $200,000.

Leigh Greden

Before his appointment as chief of staff, Greden performed similar duties as an employee consultant for Interim President Kim Schatzel, Interim President Don Loppnow and current President James Smith.

Greden initially joined EMU in 2010 as head of government and community relations. He left in July 2014 to become chief of staff for Congressman John Dingell, then returned to Eastern a year later, after Dingell’s retirement and setting up the office of his successor, his wife, Debbie Dingell.

Greden has worked for the law firms of Miller, Canfield Paddock & Stone and Dykema Gossett, working in the firms’ labor and employment groups. He also served on Ann Arbor’s City Council from 2003-2009.

Greden earned a law degree from Case Western University and a B.A. in political economy from Albion University. He is single and lives in Ann Arbor. His salary will be $156,000.
