Message from Eastern Michigan University Board of Regents Chair Mike Morris about racist incidents

Delivered at opening of Sept. 30 Special Meeting of the Board of Regents

The members of the Board of Regents, all of whom care very much about this University and in particular its students, wish to express their solidarity with the University community in the condemnation of the hateful racist messages that were spread on our campus last week. The two incidents have caused great fear, anger and frustration for many of our students, faculty and staff -- and have damaged the welcoming and inclusive environment that everyone at the University works so hard to create and that our students deserve.

Simply put, there is no place on the Eastern Michigan campus for this kind of behavior or the beliefs and attitudes that the hateful and racist messages represent. As a two-time Eastern alum, I and my Board colleagues stand firmly behind the President and our Department of Public Safety in the aggressive investigation to identify the person or persons responsible and bring them to justice. We further stand behind our students who demand justice in these cases, and who demand that the University take additional affirmative actions to address the broader issues of racism and hate that foster these incidents.
