A message from the Faculty Senate to EMU students, faculty and staff regarding racist incidents

The Faculty Senate strongly condemns the incidents of racist hate speech at King Hall and other locations on the Eastern Michigan University campus during the week of September 20-24. In light of these deeply disturbing events, and in response to the profound concerns about security and the campus climate expressed by black students and others in multiple protests and forums over the last three weeks, the Senate calls on the entire EMU community to engage in reflection and dialogue about how all of us – students, faculty, and administration – can work together to ensure that EMU is a genuinely inclusive and democratic institution in which all individuals are secure, respected, and valued.

To that end, the Faculty Senate, with the support of the administration, is organizing a day-long teach-in on racism, diversity, and inclusion at the Student Center on November 2. We invite all members of the University community – students, student organizations, faculty, and staff – who have something to offer to the dialogue on race, diversity and inclusion to join us on the planning team and/or to submit proposals for this event. A planning committee composed of students and faculty will be selected from among the proposals.

Until a website for the teach-in is established, please submit any thoughts, questions or proposals to faculty_senate@emich.edu or the Anonymous Academic Response Suggestion Form.
