YPSILANTI – Eastern Michigan University’s Charter Schools Office held a lunch on Oct.6 to celebrate four first-year scholarship recipients. Each student received a $1,000 scholarship through the First-year Student Scholarship Program.
“Our office strives to support the success of students who have graduated from one of our charter schools and chosen to continue post-secondary studies at Eastern Michigan University,” said Jolia Hill, director of the charter schools program at EMU. “This scholarship benefits students in their first year by helping them have a head start on the semester’s tuition.”
This scholarship is gifted to students in their first year of college at EMU and split between the first and second semesters. First-year student Davion Brown graduated from Detroit Public Safety Academy and was one of this year’s scholarship recipients. He is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
“I woke up one day to an email saying we had received the scholarship,” Brown said. “I was excited and felt blessed and at ease to earn the scholarship.”
To receive the scholarship, students must be a graduate of a charter school that EMU’s Charter School Office oversees. The student must graduate from high school and be admitted into EMU.
“My school was very supportive and helped me out a lot. They guided me through applying to schools and for scholarships,” Brown said. “My superintendent, Mingcoria Mintor, has known me for over 10 years. She has been a great support to me and my education.”
Each charter school offers different benefits to its students to create a stimulating learning environment and offer an alternative approach to public education. The Charter Schools Office at Eastern Michigan University oversees 11 public school academies located in Wayne, Oakland, Washtenaw, Genesee, and Saginaw.
