Eastern Michigan University GameAbove College of Engineering and Technology to host TechTalk featuring Brigadier General Brian Vile, Army’s 5th Chief of Cyber and Commandant of the U.S. Army Cyber and Electromagnetic Warfare School

YPSILANTI — Eastern Michigan University’s GameAbove College of Engineering and Technology will host a TechTalk featuring Brigadier General Brian Vile, Army’s 5th Chief of Cyber and Commandant of the U.S. Army Cyber and Electromagnetic Warfare School at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Mar. 8, located at 124 Sill Hall or via Zoom.

EMU TechTalk is a series that offers students and faculty exciting opportunities to network with renowned experts and up-and-coming leaders in the engineering and technology fields. Each TechTalk provides extensive networking opportunities and a chance to explore careers, internships, and research opportunities at the College. 

“Our Tech Talks are designed to spotlight industry leaders making a difference in their chosen fields,” said Mohamad Qatu, dean of GameAbove College of Engineering and Technology. “By giving our students and faculty a space to learn from leaders, we hope they are influenced to advance in their studies, careers, and research,” Qatu added.

Since launching EMU TechTalk, students and faculty have heard from industry leaders, including Matt Wagner, manager of Renewable Energy Development at DTE Energy, Raffaele Mautone, founder and CEO of AaDya Security, Michael Gzybowski, senior counsel at Dykema, and Chuck Gray, vice president, Vehicle Hardware Engineering, Ford Model e. 

Brigadier General Brian Vile’s talk titled “Building the Nation’s Cyber Soldiers: Our Role in National Defense” will focus on the offensive and defensive cyberspace operations forces, U.S. Army Cyber Command’s cyber capability development efforts, and how our university and governmental agencies coincide together for our Nation's defense.

Vile is the Army’s 5th Chief of Cyber and Commandant of the U.S. Army Cyber and Electromagnetic Warfare School, headquartered in Fort Gordon, Georgia.

Before joining the Cyber & Electromagnetic Warfare School, Brigadier General Vile served as the G-3 director of Operations for U.S. Army Cyber Command. In this position, he synchronized, directed, and conducted operations and defense of the Army’s portion of the Department of Defense Information Network, in addition to leading information advantage efforts.

Brigadier General Vile’s civilian education includes a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from the United States Military Academy at West Point and a master’s degree of information security from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

About Brigadier General Brian Vile 

Brigadier General Brian Vile is the Army’s 5th Chief of Cyber and Commandant of the U.S. Army Cyber and Electromagnetic Warfare School headquartered in Fort Gordon, Georgia. A native of Pennsylvania, Brigadier General Vile was commissioned in 1994 as an Infantry officer. Assignments include the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, instructing at the Infantry Officers Basic Course at Fort Benning, and the 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division at Fort Lewis, Washington. 

Subsequently selected as a telecommunications systems engineer, Brigadier General Vile served at United States Army Central Command at Fort McPherson, Georgia, and Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. Following his assignment to the 160th Theater Strategic Signal Brigade, he established and served as Director of the Army’s first Regional Cyber Center. His subsequent assignment took him to the Army Staff in the Pentagon as part of the Chief Information Officer / G6 staff, where he helped modernize Army and Joint networks and managed the Army’s IT procurement portfolio. 

In 2015, Brigadier General Vile became a plank holder in the Cyberwarfare branch. Following a U.S. Army War College Fellowship at Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College, he served as Deputy Director of the United States European Command’s Joint Cyber Center. Brigadier General Vile then commanded the 780th Military Intelligence Brigade, which provides the Army’s offensive cyberspace operations forces and manages US Army Cyber Command’s cyber capability development efforts. Before joining the Cyber & Electromagnetic Warfare School, Brigadier General Vile served as the G-3, Director of Operations for U.S. Army Cyber Command. In this position, he synchronized, directed, and conducted operations and defense of the Army’s portion of the Department of Defense Information Network, in addition to leading information advantage efforts.
