YPSILANTI — Eastern Michigan University is honored to announce that Brandon Brown, a resident of Southfield, Michigan, has been named a Presidential Scholar for 2024. Brown is one of 21 exceptional students selected for this prestigious honor, awarded to top-performing first-year students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership, and a strong commitment to their communities.

The EMU Presidential Scholarship is the most prestigious award, valued at up to $100K. The scholarship covers full tuition, fees, and four-year room and board. Presidential Scholars are active and engaged members of The Honors College at EMU, complementing their academic college experience with further opportunities for critical thinking, community engagement, and leadership.

"This award means so much to me, especially because people who come from my area and look like me aren't expected to get such a high-achieving award," said Brown. "I hope to inspire and set an example for people like me to aim high and achieve big."

Brown graduated from Wylie E Groves High School and plans to achieve a degree in computer science. After college, he wants to pursue a career in software development or mobile app development. In high school, he was a member of the National Honor Society and was on his school’s basketball team, which participated in food drives. Outside of high-school extracurriculars, Brown tutored kids at the local middle school, helping to provide knowledge and assistance to other students in academics.

Brown is also thankful for this award as it gives him more financial freedom. “Because of this award, I can focus on my studies without the burden of paying for classes and having financial problems,” said Brown. Currently, he is a part of EMU’s National Society of Black Engineers and a member of the Information Assurance Student Association, which supports students interested in careers in information assurance engineering. Brown is also interested in playing intramural basketball.

"We are excited to have such an impressive group of scholars join us at EMU and the Honors College this fall,” said Ann Eisenberg, dean of the Honors College. “They come from different backgrounds, cultures, and countries, but they all share a passion for learning, service, and leadership, and they have all pledged to give back to EMU through their work in the classroom, student organizations, and campus offices.”

The EMU Presidential Scholarship is aligned with the University's commitment to promoting student success and engagement so students can achieve their academic goals while positively impacting the world.

Qualified students can apply for the Presidential Scholarship during their senior year of high school. For more information about the Presidential Scholarship, visit the webpage
