Message from EMU President James Smith regarding Michigan State University tragedy

It is with heavy hearts that we collectively share the pain and anguish of the Michigan State University community. We offer them our support in any way we can be of assistance. This senseless tragedy has once again uprooted our lives and created fear, anger, anxiousness and concern. Incidents of this nature occur far too often in our society today and, unfortunately, we are forced to realize that this is now part of the day-to-day realities and fears that we all share.

We understand this time is difficult for our students here at Eastern, as well as for students across Michigan. You may have a friend or relative who is enrolled or works at MSU. It is important at this time that we lean on one another to find support when needed. It is important that we remain resilient in supporting each other as we move forward. Talk about your feelings and your concerns with loved ones, family, friends, associates, or professionals. Our professionals in Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) are prepared to assist those who are overwhelmed by anxiety, fear, or in crisis. CAPS can be contacted 24/7 at 734-487-1118 -- with after-hours crisis assistance available at the same number.

Safety remains our top priority. Eastern's campus is a safe place to live, attend class, and work, and the University offers numerous resources as part of our commitment to your safety.

EMU Police remain ever vigilant and will maintain their visibility on campus through the continued increased staffing that was announced last night. EMU Police emergency: 734-487-1222 or 911.

We have more than 1,000 security cameras on campus that are monitored by the Department of Public Safety 24/7.

Last night, we shared additional important campus resources and I will share those with you again today:

We will continue to follow the situation at MSU closely and advise of further developments as necessary. In the meantime, we want to do everything we can on our campus to ensure that members of the Eastern community are able to obtain any assistance they need.
