YPSILANTI – Eastern Michigan University Nursing Professor Tsu-Yin Wu was recently awarded the Midwest Nursing Research Society (MNRS) 2023 Excellence in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award, Senior Career award for her contributions to advancing health care.

According to the MNRS, the newly established award recognizes the contribution of a member who has demonstrated outstanding commitment and made significant contributions to advance equitable health outcomes and reduce health disparities through research, which has enhanced the science and practice of nursing in the MNRS region.

"As a graduate student, I went to the Midwest Nursing Research Society to be connected with established nursing researchers and learned how to be like them one day, so receiving this award is a full circle moment,” said Wu. “It brings me great joy to be recognized for my work, using research to elevate, advocate and make changes in underserved communities, especially in Asian American communities."

The MNRS award evaluated Wu's research's quality, scope, and overall impact. Wu’s most recent studies provided evidence of racism as a predictor of firearm behaviors and risks and the complicated mechanisms between racial discrimination and COVID-19 vaccination intention among Asian Americans during the pandemic. Her research has also informed public policy contributing to better cancer care outcomes. Additionally, Wu was instrumental in developing a public health workforce to address emergency preparedness during the COVID-19 pandemic and creating a sustainable infrastructure for implementing culturally-relevant health-related programs for diverse audiences.

Wu, known internationally for her work in health disparities, is the director of EMU’s Center for Health Disparities Innovation and Studies. She was recently recognized as one of the 2020 Notable Women in Health Care by Crain's Detroit Business, a recipient of the Robert Wood Johnson  Foundation Health Equity Award in 2020, and received a Laurel Award for health equity from the Prevent Cancer Foundation in 202

Wu will receive the award on Friday, March 31, during an annual MNRS business meeting.
