YPSILANTI — In honor of 175 years of excellence, innovation, and education, EMU is hosting a historic walking tour of its campus on Wednesday, July 24, from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m., as part of the university's 175th-anniversary celebration. University Archivist Alexis Braun Marks will lead this event and will provide an educational experience focusing on instructional spaces that have played a significant role in EMU's history.
"Many people who work or study here may not know much about the history of our campus buildings," said Braun Marks. "This is a great opportunity to learn about Eastern's rich heritage and how our campus has grown through the years."
The walking tour will commence at Welch Hall, the site of the first training school on campus, and will include stops at the Roosevelt and Rackham buildings and the site of the original Home Economics House. Participants will learn about the evolution of EMU's campus, how buildings have been repurposed over the years, and the historical significance of various spaces.
The walking tour is open to the public and free to attend. Interested participants should register on the website in advance. Future tours may be offered based on interest, with plans to develop a virtual walking tour for year-round accessibility.
