YPSILANTI — Eastern Michigan University will honor Major Frank Maki with a bench dedication ceremony on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024, at 3 p.m. The ceremony will occur in the Outdoor Memorial Garden at Roosevelt Hall, 698 W Forest in Ypsilanti. Major Maki was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action after saving fellow wounded soldiers during a mission on June 22, 1971, where he was severely injured. The dedication ceremony will recognize his commitment to his country, students, and the University community.
The ceremony will open with remarks from Jill Hunsberger, EMU's associate vice president for advancement, EMU President James Smith, Tony Pappas from the Arm of Honor Alumni Association, Patti Tye (daughter of Major Frank Maki), Lt. Col. Aaron Peters from the Army Soldier for Life Program, and Kirk Profit from the Arm of Honor Alumni Association. Hunsberger will also offer closing remarks before the public reception, beginning at 3:38 p.m. in Room 22, Roosevelt Hall.
