YPSILANTI – Eastern Michigan University's Advising and Career Development Center (UACDC) is removing barriers to landing a dream job by helping students and alumni get a jumpstart on professional attire. UACDC will host a grand opening celebration and invite students to the EMU Career Closet from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 27, in McKenny Hall, room 200. In addition, students can shop the Career Closet Monday-Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. throughout the semester.

"Having access to professional clothing for interviews, job fairs, student teaching, and other professional activities is a huge barrier for our students as this type of clothing can be expensive," said Logann Dolan, career coach at EMU. "I'm thrilled to help break down that barrier and provide the Career Closet on EMU's campus."

The EMU Career Closet will provide students with professional clothing to develop their professional identity without financial strain. EMU students can make an appointment or drop into the UACDC to shop and select up to four items of professional wear per visit each semester.

"We want our students to have access to convenient clothing options on campus," said Dolan. "We're excited that we've finally achieved this goal, as it's something our office has worked on for many years. To finally see it come to life this academic year is incredibly rewarding not just for our students but also for our staff."

In addition to the Career Closet, UACDC has also partnered with JCPenney to offer Suit-Up, a partnership providing students an opportunity to get career and professional items up to 60% off each semester. On Sep. 28, students and alumni can text EMUEAGLE to 67292 to get their coupon, visit the JCPenney Suit Up landing page to shop online or in-store until Oct. 2 and browse over 1,000 professional clothing items.

Career Closet items are provided by community members who donate clothing items and shoes to the Closet and also monetary donations. To continue the initiative, the UACDC team gained corporate sponsors and donors from Briarwood Mall and Dress for Success, Michigan, in addition to several monetary donors. UACDC always accepts donations to keep the initiative running for the upcoming semesters. Individuals interested in supporting the initiative can donate here.
