Eastern Michigan University issues Notice of Default to Provident Group – EMU Properties LLC for closure/failure to open University parking structure

YPSILANTI --  Eastern Michigan University has issued a Notice of Default to Provident Group – EMU Properties LLC's (Provident EMU) for its closing of, and failure to reopen, the University’s four-story parking structure, located in the center of campus. Following the January 2018 agreement between the University and Preston Hollow Capital, Provident EMU was assigned by Preston Hollow as a concessionaire in charge of much of the University’s parking system, including the parking structure.

Provident EMU closed the parking structure on Sept. 25, 2022, shortly after the start of the fall semester, stating that an assessment of repairs was needed. The structure is a key, centrally-located facility near most academic buildings on campus. The closure frustrated many students who, as a result, had to park in other lots across campus.

The parking structure provides 784 spaces, representing more than 8% of the University’s parking system.

Under the 2018 agreement, Provident EMU has the responsibility to maintain and operate the Parking System, and keep it continuously open and operational.

“We’re disappointed that our efforts to work with Provident EMU to resolve this matter have not been met with a positive response, leading us to issue the Notice of Default,” Kraft said. “We very much hope that Provident will live up to its obligations, perform any necessary maintenance work, and reopen our parking garage soon.” Although the University felt it necessary to send this notice, it continues to work with Provident EMU to try to resolve these and other ongoing issues.
