Eastern Michigan University police investigate bomb threat, find no suspicious items

YPSILANTI —  A bomb threat at Eastern Michigan University this afternoon (April 9) was investigated and found not to be legitimate. The threat resulted in the evacuation of several residence halls as EMU Police searched the buildings. The University first issued an alert to campus community at 12:38 p.m., and the "all clear" message was sent at 2:38 p.m. 

"Out of an abundance of caution, EMU Police responded quickly to the possible threat," said Walter Kraft, Eastern Michigan University vice president for communications. "The safety and security of our campus community is our number one priority. EMU Police worked quickly to help evacuate and search the buildings. We greatly appreciate the cooperation of our students who also responded quickly and efficiently to the evacuation notice, which helped police do their job in a timely fashion. 

"The source of the threat remains under investigation and we are being assisted by local and national agencies in that process."

April 9, 2024, 2:38 p.m.

EMU Critical: ALL CLEAR. EMU Police have cleared all buildings. No suspicious items found. Please return to normal operations.

April 9, 2024, 1:48 p.m.

EMU Critical - Update: EMU Police have completed the search of two of the three residence halls (Wise, Buell and Putnam) and found no evidence of a threat. The other buildings referenced previously (Walton, Phelps, Best, Downing, Eateries and DC1) were included as a precaution. The third building is currently being searched. Further updates will be provided.
