Eastern Michigan University and partners host discussion on combatting dating violence and sexual assault

YPSILANTI —  With nearly 1 in 3 college students experiencing dating violence or abuse, awareness and education are crucial for building safer campuses nationwide. To address this critical issue, Eastern Michigan University is hosting a community discussion on dating violence and sexual assault from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 20, 2024,  in the Student Center, Ballroom B. This event, hosted by EMU’s Special Victims Unit, SafeHouse Center, and the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office aims to educate attendees while connecting them with essential community resources.

"Raising awareness about dating violence and sexual assault is a priority for our community," said Andrea Elliott, community engagement officer and Special Victims Unit investigator at Eastern. "This event offers a safe space for individuals to learn, ask questions, and access necessary resources. We’re committed to making sure everyone feels supported and informed."

The discussion will feature experts from the EMU Police Department, Title IX, the Women’s Resource Center, and Counseling and Psychological Services. Topics will include identifying signs of dating violence and sexual assault, understanding the impact on victims, and exploring resources and support systems available to students and the broader community.

The event is free and open to EMU students, faculty, staff, and community members. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of dating violence and sexual assault, equipping them with knowledge to help prevent and address these issues.
